The
Big Bang Theory
This week I was
thrilled watch a newer episode of the Big Bang Theory entitled “The Vengeance
Formula” In this opening scene Howard is looking to take their new relationship
to next level with Bernadette while she isn’t so sure where the relationship is
heading yet. Bernadette is portrayed as an innocent almost child-like
character, due to the mis en scene. Bernadette is dressed in lighter spring
colors while Howard is dressed in darker colors. In this scene the lighting is
also behind her. In the following scene the guys are in the cafeteria at they
work. The lighting for this scene is flood lighting and spot lighting from
various lights located on walls closest to where the guys are seated. In the
next scene the lighting is particular to the way the characters act. When Sheldon
is rude to Howard about only having a master’s degree in engineering he is
standing while Howard is sitting as the under-dog and Sheldon’s position causes
his face to be shadowed before he even speaks to Howard. This foreshadows to
the audience that Sheldon isn’t going to be the good guy in this scene. The use
of lighting and in this scene helps to describe the characters attitudes of
their personalities in this episode.
I also watched an episode of Big Bang Theory this week, and I agree that they use a lot of film techniques to help enhance the show. In the episode that I saw, Penny is trying to get a job as a bartender, so she decides to make everyone a drink, in order to get more practice. In the scene where Penny is making the drinks a long shot is used to help show that everyone is in the room. A flood light is also used. A match cut is used when Leonard makes a nerdy remark about his drink, showing Penny’s face then back to Leonard’s face. Each time one of the characters orders a drink, a close up is used to help show who is ordering. Mis en scene is used in the scene when Raj starts to tell Penny about his parents. Leonard, Sheldon, and Howard are all behind the counter, so that Penny and Raj are the center on the shot. Once again, a match cut is used showing Raj talking, then the faces of the other characters. This is done so the viewer can see the reactions of the other characters. The scene then ends with humor, with Raj running out of the room drunk, looking for a webcam.
