One movie that I have watched recently is 21 Jump Street which is a remake of a popular TV show from the 1980s which starred Johnny Depp. It is about 2 cops who have to go back to high school in order to bust up a drug smuggling "syndicate." This movie is absolutely hilarious; one of the things that make it so funny is the use of the literary element irony throughout most of the film. One example of irony of this film is the fact that the 2 cops who get sent back to school, their names are Schmidt played Jonah Hill and Jenko played by Channing Tatum, end up being the complete reverse of what they were while they themselves were in high school. Jenko who during his time in high school was the most popular guy in school, ended up hanging out with the "nerdy kids" in the science club because of the fact that what he thought of as cool no longer flew in high school. Schmidt who on the other hand was the stereotypical nerd in high school, he was even seen dressing up like Eminem to be cool, ended up becoming popular because all the things he was interested in, global warming, the environment etc.. Were now actually cool. Another example of irony from this movie is the fact that the 2 cops sent to bust up the drug ring actually end up having to take the drug themselves in order to earn the dealers trust. This winds up in a complexly hilarious seen of them running throughout the school high out of their minds.

I also saw the movie 21 jump street recently. i was unaware that the movie was a remake of a 1980's film though but i still really liked the movie. I waited to see this movie for awhile and it lived up to my expectations. I agree with your statement that irony was a big factor in this movie. Also another use of irony is that their class schedules got mixed up when they were in high school and the "nerdy" kid had to take blow off classes like drama while the "jock" had to take hard classes like Ap chemistry. Also one more technique that made this movie better was the use of sound particularly in the music they would play very fast and energetic music for some of the more action filled parts and for the more calm and relaxing part they used softer music to send a calming effect to the viewer. this movie was mostly shot in medium and close up shots. Also the use of theme was greatly used they tried to stick to the theme of friendship and they had the character be very close in the start and then in the middle of the movie they started to grow apart and in the end they came back together in a big dramatic way.
ReplyDeleteI also recently saw 21 Jump Street, and found it to be hilarious. I thought that the actors playing the two lead roles did an especially good job in playing their characters. I also found that irony developed the plot, and added to the humor of the film. One example of plot development through irony is the relationship between the two main characters. The two main characters in the film, Greg and Morton, went through high school being opposites. Greg was popular, athletic, and lacked intelligence and Morton was nerdy, unpopular, not athletic, but very intelligent. The irony occurs when the two characters meet at police training school. Greg has trouble making it through training because he continuously fails the written tests required to become a police officer, and Morton continuously fails the physical tests required to become an officer. While in police school, the two characters helped each other through the training, as Greg whips Morton into shape, and Morton tutors Greg for the written tests. In the end, both characters pass training school through each other’s help, and then become partners, thus setting the stage for the partners’ assignment to take down a drug syndicate at a local high school (what the film is about.) Throughout the film, I also noticed various references to themes in society. One theme referenced in the film was the Slim Shady craze in the 1990’s, in which many people across the United States took on the physical appearance of the new popular white rapper, Slim Shady. The Slim Shady look included bleached blonde hair, wearing a gold chain, and a white tee-shirt with baggy pants. In the film, Morton took on the Slim Shady appearance in high school, as his hair was bleached blonde, he wore a gold chain around his neck, and wore a white tee shirt and baggy pants. Another theme I noticed in the film was society’s change in its interests and concerns. In the 1990’s high school, the cool kids cared about sports, were athletic, and put forth little effort in school as intelligent kids were seen as lame. However, when Greg and Morton return to their local high school as undercover agents several years later, they find that the new cool kids value intelligence, and are very concerned with the environment, with little care regarding athletics. In the realm of film techniques, I noticed that music was heavily used to embellish scenes in the film, as it intensified during action scenes. In action scenes, short medium shots with very short duration were also frequently used.
ReplyDeleteI have also seen 21 Jump Street. I thought this movie was very funny. I agree that the movie was very ironic and the irony was part of what made the movie funny. After they became cops, they thought they were going to be working in the city and that there was going to be alot of action. But instead, they had to ride bikes around a park. Whe they were in the park, they noticed some sketchy bikers doing suspicious things. As they more closly inspected, they saw that the bikers had drugs on them and started to try to arrest them. After running a while, the more athletic of the two ops ended up catching on of the bad guys. During this scene, there was mis en scene. When the bad guy was on the ground and the cop was on top of him, the camera went to a long shot to show an American flag in the background. This flag symbolized that he had caught the bad guy and that America was the reason why. There was also mis en scene when they were in the church on 21 jump street. In the church, it showed a statue of Jesus to show that the operation they were in was serious. However, the Jesus statue looked Korean and they made jokes about it, showing that 21 jump street maby wasn't so serious.

I thinks an must see, because it was hilarious. this is because they used a lot of ironic humor. One example of irony of this film is the fact that the 2 cops who get sent back to school, their names are Schmidt played Jonah Hill and Jenko played by Channing Tatum, end up being the complete reverse of what they were while they themselves were in high school. This was because if the there was an action part it was always fast music and the non action parts had slow soft music. this movie also kind of appedmises some of 1990s culture.
