"Reservoir Dogs"

I recently watched the 1992 film “Reservoir Dogs” directed by Quentin Tarantino.  I thought this movie was very well made and i enjoyed it very much.  The film is about a group of criminals in the aftermath of a heist that went terribly wrong.  The film starts out before the heist with the men in a diner talking.  One thing that Tarantino does in many of his movie’s is having very long scenes with a lot of dialogue.  He uses this technique often to get to know the characters in the movie and what their personalities are like.  What makes this movie so special to me is that the actual bank robbery is skipped in the film.  After the diner scene the movie cuts to two of the robbers fleeing in a car with one shot in the stomach.  The majority of the film is about the men back at the safe house trying to understand what went wrong with the heist and they ultimately come up with one conclusions.  There must have been a rat among their crew.  One of the film techniques that this movie uses is editing.  It does this by using a very unique scene order.  Throughout the film it shows the main character’s meeting up with the boss and how they got involved in the heist.  Tarantino does this to show the audience how they got involved and ultimately tells us who the rat in their crew is.  Another thing this movie does well is it’s use of music.  There is a scene in the film where one of the robber’s is torturing a police officer to try and discover who the rat was.  Throughout this scene a very upbeat song, “Stuck in the Middle with You”, is playing.  This is a very good use of juxtaposition between the very dark events taking place with a very upbeat song playing  giving the audience a sense of shock about whats happening in the scene.  I think the use of the unique scene selection and the fact that the actual heist was left out of the film really added to the mystery of what happened and how things went wrong.  This film used film techniques very well to create an entertaining mystery.
