This week I went to see Mirror Mirror. The movie is a remake
of the Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Snow White has always
been one of my favorite Disney movies and unfortunately I do not think that
Mirror Mirror does it justice. One big difference between the two movies is
tone. In the original film, bright, vibrant colors are used and there is upbeat
music, giving the movie an overall tone of happiness and cheeriness. In Mirror
Mirror, the color scheme is much duller and darker and the music is much lower
and more eerie, giving the movie a much more sinister and somber tone. Another
major difference between the two movies is the characterization of each of the
seven dwarfs. In the original Snow White, the dwarfs come off as friendly and
cheery (apart from grumpy) and they are miners. In Mirror Mirror, the dwarfs
are rather creepy and they are thieves. In Mirror Mirror, there is a fighting
scene in which the dwarfs and Snow White face off against the Prince and the
Queen’s army. During this scene, there are several long shots so that you can
see everyone fighting and then there are also close up shots of Snow White and
the Prince fighting together and you can see in their faces that they actually
love each other.

Mirror Mirror was one weird movie. I agree with Ally and what she said about the color scheme. It was much darker than the original Snow White. One scene in particular that stands out in my mind was when Snow White first went into the village, she was wearing a yellow jacket and everything else in the village was shades of black, white, or gray. There was no other color. This helps set the mood of the scene because since it’s all shown in shades on the gray scale it shows how gloomy and unhappy of a place it is to live there with the new Queen in charge of everything. If you juxtapose that next to when the King, Snow White’s father, was in power, everyone was happy and everything was colorful and vibrate and bright. This showed happier times and there was generally just more light with the King in power instead of the Queen. At the very end of the movie there’s the scene when the Queen tried to give Snow White the apple, and this apple was so red and perfect just like the one in the originally Snow White. This helped relate the two movies together even though they had different stories throughout.
