“Slap” is a Doritos commercial from Superbowl XLIV features
the famous line, “keep your hands off my momma, and keep your hands off my
Doritos”. The target audience is primarily 15-25. This is because the humor
used is light and not difficult to understand. It is about a date, and most
15-25 year olds are dating and can relate easily. Although all of the actors in
the commercial are African American, there is no evidence to suggest that this
commercial doesn’t appeal to all races. The target audience is also mostly
male. This is because the propaganda is mostly during the scene with the young
boy and man. Also, we see a few shots from the man’s point of view, thus
associating ourselves with him. Lastly, the target audience is low-middle class
because Doritos are not expensive or a luxury product and everything shown in
the commercial is average. For visual elements, we see a lot of close ups or
extreme close ups. From the man’s point of view, we see the woman’s butt being
checked out. We then are shown another close up of the boy’s hand dropping the
remote, to the bowl of Doritos. We also get a close up of the boy trying to
intimidate the man by just showing their heads. We also hear a sound effect
when the boy slaps the man; this is meant to sound unrealistic to add humor.
For propaganda, we experience humor towards the end. We also see plain folks
because the house, people, and product are all average or of a decent price.
