Nike Skateboarding came out with an online commercial featuring a couple of
the skateboarders they sponsor. It main focus is on a skater named Paul
Rodriguez. Throughout the commercial he skates through the city of Los Angeles
with many low camera angles that pan along with him as he is riding. Also every
time he does a trick on a ledge, over a stair set or any other gap there are
separating angles that show different perspectives for the trick. As he skates
he meets up with other famous skateboarders that are also sponsored by Nike.
All of the skateboarders featured are very well known names that inspire a
testimonial propaganda technique. I think the most important thing about this
commercial is the song that is used in the background. It features the song “Today
was a Good Day” by Ice Cube. This gives the whole commercial an upbeat and
happy feeling. As more tricks are done by the various skateboarders the song
also goes along with their movements. Humor is also very widely used not just
in Ice Cube’s song, but at the end of the commercial. Paul Rodriguez is
crossing a street when he hits a small rock that sends him flying. As he turns
to retrieve his skateboard back the Rapper Ice Cube drives over and breaks his
skateboard with his car.
