Mad Men

Recently, I have watched the first episode of Mad Men. This show is about the life of two marketing managers in the mid 1900’s, who deem themselves mad men. The first episode is title “How smoke gets in your eyes.” This episode is about the mad men’s struggle to create a good marketing plan for a cigarette company. They are having trouble with creating ads for the company because the U.S. government has recently outlawed ads that say smoking is healthy or that it's not dangerous. The stress from not having any good ideas for the ads causes the mad men to struggle in other aspects of their life. The title is like the whole story, crammed in one sentence. When smoke gets your eyes, you become disoriented and confused, just like the mad men did as the "smoke" of the cigarette company's ad.  The show uses a lot of close ups. The close ups help show the expressions on the face of the mad men. This helps portray the characters as the stereotypical marketing manager. The show also has the characters using some of the advertising techniques that were brand new at the time. We have recently learned some of these techniques such as the layout and loaded words.
