Direct Tv Commercial Featuring Charlie Sheen
The advertisement with DirectTv featuring the (in)famous actor Charlie Sheen uses some very obvious forms of propaganda. The most obvious is the propaganda technique called "Testimonial". This is when a celebrity is used to endorse a product. Charlie Sheen is obviously the celebrity used to endorse DirectTv by being in the commercial. Another propaganda technique used in this advertisement is referred to as "Two Valued Orientation". Two Valued Orientation is when an advertisement says that you only have two choices when in reality there are most likely endless options. In this commercial you either have DirectTv and record your shows and movies or you end up sad, then going to happy our because of said sadness, then being up for anything because you went to happy hour and presumably under the influence of alcohol, this leads you to going out to a Turkish bath house, which happens to be where you meet Charlie Sheen, and eventually you end up reenacting scenes from the movie Platoon with Charlie Sheen. I for one think it's stupid how they show reenacting scenes from Platoon with Charlie Sheen as a bad thing because I would absolutely love to do that, but I digress. This commercial also uses the propaganda technique called "Humor". Obviously this is when a company makes it's advertisement humorous so people can laugh and hopefully remember the advertisement and in turn the product.
