Titanic
Recently I saw the movie Titanic. This movie was directed by the famous director James Cameron who is famous for his high budget films and action movies. Even though Titanic was a drama James Cameron did a very good job of making it very intense and exciting. Also the special effects used in this movie were very well done. This film used CGI combined with miniature models of the ship to shoot many of its scenes. During the sinking scene of this film it greatly used the miniatures and CGI to make these scenes look extremely realistic. One of the great things that this film does is that it went down to the spot where Titanic actually sank and got real footage of the ship at the ocean floor. During these scenes Cameron showed rooms from the ship and showed old plates and people’s belongings to show how sudden the ship sank and the lives it took and effected. This really put in perspective what really happened on Titanic and that it wasn’t just a movie to entertain an audience but it showed the audience how tragic the sinking really was and it makes the movie hit home more for the audience. I thought that this film did a very good job of making the very intense action scenes exciting while also making the dramatic and tragic scenes sad and touching for the audience.

This film is interesting because of its combination of action and drama. I agree James Cameron did a very good job with special effects the ship looked extremely realistic. The entire movie is a flashback of a woman Rose with a great story. This terrible tragedy was depicted very well through this film. Most viewers felt extreme sympathy and shock while the ship sank. Class systems are clearly shown giving unfair treatment to the less wealthy passengers. Leonardo Dicaprio uses art and humor to steal Rose away from her self centered fiancee. This love story reveals the theme that love and marriage is not about money. Flat angles and medium to long shots are mostly used to show the crowds of passengers. Music is played to set the mood when Rose and Dicaprio have a fun night dancing. The Irish songs played in this scene are meant to represent the lower class, something rose would never dance to before. When the ship sinks violens are played to set a mellow and somewhat hopeful mood. I agree this film was very touching for the audience, from intense scenes of love and excitement to a tragic ending. This tragedy makes you think about how easy it is for something to go terribly wrong. Sympathy goes out to the lower class who were locked and left to die.
ReplyDeleteThe titanic is my all time favorite movie, I could watch it over and over and never get sick of it. The combination of romance and drama creates such a good film. One of the techniques that I really think is done well in this film is how it uses flashbacks for the set up off the film. The film is told in present day by a woman, Rose, telling her story of being in the titanic. They use flashback here to move back and forth to her as a old woman reflecting on her past to her as a young girl seeing what she went through. In most films flashbacks usually confuse me,I normally do not like how it skips around but in this film the director used it very well and it really fits the storyline.In one of the most famous scenes of the movie where Jack and Rose are standing on the front of the ship the director uses low, high, medium, and long shot angles to film this scene. All the different angle types really work well for this because it shows you all the different angles of them and you get a good view of the whole scene.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I love most about “Titanic” is the way the story is told. I enjoy the way James Cameron uses a flashback to portray the events to its viewers. As Rose begins to tell the story, the camera focuses beyond her and on the eerie, sunken ship behind her. The film crew then dissolved a restored the image of the “ship of dreams” into the scene. It makes the viewers feel like time is literally rewinding and the film is taking them back to 1912. In the same way that the story is presented, the story closes using this method. Having the camera pan across Rose’s sleeping figure implies that we are looking into her memory. As the shot order shows the ship progressively repairing itself, we see the beauty in it. Because we weren’t there ourselves and we can’t dive and see the ship, it gives us the chance to image what the ship was like in its hay day, while also seeing what tragedy has done to it. I also think that Cameron left the final scene up to interpretation. Rose is dressed in all white and standing with Jack at the top of the stairs. I think the white represents Rose’s purity, her commitment to Jack. The shot always leaves me wondering whether or not Rose is still dreaming, or is now finally united with Jack in heaven.

The Titanic has many 'match cuts' for example when rose is showing her necklace the blue of the jewel matches the blue in 'older' roses eye when it brings the flash back, back to the present day. Another example of a 'match cut' is when after the ship sinks they show all of the ship when it was up and running then they show it all covered in sea weed. Many times through out the movie they have a long shot of the ship with a pan all around it. Once the ship starts to sink the camera is tracking with Jack and Rose as they try to get up on the deck so they don't drown. The one scene when Jack and Rose are running around the ship and they have *** in the car in one of the bottom levels of the ship. When the guards start to look for them there is a light on the car shinning down on top if it which brings one of the guards attention to it, but fortunately they get away. Overall it was a good movie and I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.
ReplyDeleteI watched Titanic this week. This movie has many good film techniques throughout it. For example, the scene where Rose saves Jack from dying while he is handcuffed to a pole at the bottom of the ship while it is flooding has many different uses of film techniques. As the water begins to flood the floor, the camera tracks down the hallway. Then, the camera shows Jack and a door that the water is flooding through. The camera then cuts to a close up of the water pouring in through the door, and returns to the angle in which the viewer can see Jacks worry. As Rose is running down the hall, calling Jack’s name, the lights begin to flicker. This adds suspenseful to the viewers because they are afraid that she will not make it. After Rose finds Jack she goes back to get help. Eventually she comes back with an ax, and this time the water level is much higher and the lighting is even dimmer. Jack wants Rose to practice hitting the same mark so that she will not hit him. When I watched this I felt as though she needed to just get the handcuffs off of him because they were running out of time. This scene kept me at the edge of my seat hoping that they would make it out alive.
