This past week, I watched “Switched at Birth”. This is a series
that deals with two teenagers that were, obviously, switched at birth. They go
on living their lives not knowing that there could even be a possibility that
they weren’t in the right family. For a school project, Bay, was doing research
on genetics and asked her parents if she could get a blood test. When the
results came back, it was found that Bay was not really their child. They came
into contact with the other family once they found this out only to find that
the other girl, Daphne, was deaf. Both of the families wanted to be together to
raise both girls. Bay’s parents struggled with the fact that Daphne was deaf
and they were trying their best to accommodate her. The mother went out to buy
a car that was better and safer. While she is talking about the new car, it is
clear that it was an advertisement. They were advertising for a Lexus. They
said how great of a gas mileage it got, how the stereo was better, there were
more mirrors around the car and all the new air bags it had. This was a clever
way to put it in the show because the father was fighting with the mother how
she bought this car without him knowing. While she was explaining herself, she
told him all of the features that it had and how much safer it would be to
drive with Daphne around. At first I didn’t know I was watching an advertisement
until they were showing the entire car and logo. I felt that it was a very
clever way to do this.
