Sons of Guns

This relatively new series shows the entrepreneurship of Will Hayden, the owner of Red Jacket Firearms LLC. The company makes custom firearms for well suited customers that are gun enthusiasts.  In the episode I saw, the workers there were trying to design a suppressor for a .50 Caliber sniper rifle.  To make things really interesting and heighten the mood of the whole episode and also to help the viewer understand what the workers are doing they editors did a couple things with the camera work and editing.  Sometimes 3D sketches needed to be drawn out to show what the workers were fabricating to go onto the gun to satisfy the customers needs.  This is a type of montage that easily shows and explains to the viewer what needs to be done.  Another use of montage comes in when during the testing of the gun in the firing range, they use a high speed camera to slow down time to add to dramatic effect.  This special camera allows you to see the bullet exit the barrel and see all the actions of the gun working in unison.  This sort of montage extends time and adds emphasis to the hard work all the workers put in to make the gun functional and effective.  In addition to the montage, the camera pans extremely fast after the gun fires to the target down range.  An explosion goes off as a final part of the mis en scene and the buyer of the gun is very satisfied with his new product.
