The Last Song
Yesterday I watched the Last Song. It is a movie about a girl and
her brother that go to their dad’s house over the summer because their mom sent
them too. As you probably already guessed, her parents are divorced. Her dad has
a medical condition that neither his daughter nor son knows about. He asks his
doctor if he could stay off medicine while hiss children are visiting because he
wants to be all there mentally. As the daughter and her boyfriend came back from
a wedding they recently went to, her brother announced that the turtle eggs were
hatching. These eggs were being eaten by raccoons a couple weeks earlier so the
daughter took it to her own responsibility to protect them. As they were
watching them hatch, the dad said he was going to go get some more flashlights
so they could see well. As he was walking back to the house to get a flashlight,
he collapses. Sound wise, you could hear him coughing over the sound of the
waves crashing. As his coughs got louder, the daughter notices he has collapses
and rushes over to him. The mise en scene in that shot was put together very
well. The director put the daughter in the front close up to the camera so you
could see her reaction, and the father who had collapsed in the back like he was
powerless and struggling to survive.

ReplyDeleteI’ve also watched The Last Song and I have the turtle scene is one of my favorites. When Ronnie discovers there are turtle eggs on the beach and that other animals could and did begin to eat them she turns in to a nicer character than we had scene ever before throughout this movie. The director chose to use a song to show the passing of time to the audience and all of the work Ronnie did to try and save the turtles. Also there a scene in this montage in which Jonah looks at Ronnie, his sister through binoculars. When he does this it was an interesting choice of the director to have used a fancy computer program to darken the areas in the shot that would most likely not be seen if you were actually looking through the binoculars yourself. Then Jonah says a line the music begins to fade as there is a close up on one section the contraption in which Ronnie has been creating. The camera then zooms out and we see the entire concoction that she’s created and get a laugh. The lighting used in this scene is bright lighting to make it look like they’re really on a beach.
This movie is another loved Nicholas Sparks books that were turned into a film. One scene in this film that uses good film techniques is when Ronnie and Will first meet. It takes place at the beach while Will is in the middle of a volleyball game. It starts off by Ronnie walking, and they use a tracking shot that walks with her and then when will bumps into her, causing her drink to spill everywhere, they use slow motion as she and him fall, and the drink goes everywhere. As they get up, and she gives him attitude she starts walking away he begins to follow her and they again start to use tracking so that you follow there conversation and they walk together. During there conversation once they have stopped walking the camera goes from different shots focusing on each of there faces so you can read there body lanuage, and understand how they are feeling during the conversation. This scene uses many differnt camera angles to portray the meeting of Will and Ronnie. The camera angles are important here, because Ronnie is so stubborn and her and Will are completly different people, and as they use tracking, and the shots of her face while they are talking you can watch ehr attitude go from negaitive, to somewhat postive by the end of this scene.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie the Last Song by Nicholas Sparks the relationship between Ronnie and her father Steve shows a lot of growth. At the begging of the summer when Ronnie is forced to visit her dad with her little brother their relationship is strained. She hasn't taled to her dad in three years and wasnt planning too. The relationship began to change when Ronnie was getting charged with shop lifting although Blaze a girls she became some what friends with actually set her up. But when Steve comes down to the police station to pick up his daughter he beilieves her when she tells him what happened. As the time goes on Their relationship grows stronger and even stronger when the truth comes out that Steve has cancer that is taking turn for the worse. Unfortunatly at the end steve passes away but leaves Ronnie with something that changed her life for the better. Besides mending their relationship, Ronnie was able to mend her relationship with the piano and made the decision to go to julliard in the fall. The lesson from this movie is you should never take your parents or anyone for granted. Because even when they get annoying in the end you will need there guidance and support.
