A Walk To Remember is one of my mom and I's favorite movie. This movie is about the "popular" kid in school Landon who falls in love with "weird" girl named Jamie, who is all about god and doing well and not caring about what people think about her. As their relationship goes on Jamie finally tells Landon that she has leukemia and has stop responding to treatment and just wants to live her life with out always being in the hospital. Landon proposes to Jamie at the end of their senior year in high school. They end up getting married and there he story line kind of throws you for a loop with the ending.
In this film the director uses a lot of the different film techniques. In the beginning of the movie the camera tracks Landon as he tries to out drive the cops. When the scenes change the director uses a lot of fading in and out. The music they use really sets the mood for the movie. in one part Landon and Jamie are dancing on the deck under the stars and the song that is playing is Someday We'll Know, it really show that the mood is happy and that everyone is having a good time. In the "play" scene the camera tracks around Jamie as she sings a song to Landon and it also pans Jamie as we walks from one side on the stage to the other. Throughout this entire movie there are a lot of medium angles, only a few extreme close ups and some extreme long shots. At the end of the movie as Landon is talking the camera tracks from the church to the sky in kind of a metaphor.

“A Walk to Remember” is an amazing film. Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, it definitely earns a spot in the top ten love stories along with “Titanic” and “The Notebook.” Throughout the whole movie Jamie is constantly wearing this olive green sweater. Needless to say, she’s not the best dress girl in the school. However, my favorite scene in the movie is when Jamie and Landon are stars in the school musical, and Jamie begins to sing. In this scene Jamie appears in a beautiful blue gown and I think the directors did this purposefully, as a form of mis en scene. The transformation from the conservative clothes to this dress allows the viewer to get a different perspective on the character. While she may be “different,” she is still a beautiful girl, which Landon begins to realize more and more. Also, the music is very important in this scene. Not only is she singing this song for the musical, but she is also singing it with meaning, to Landon. The lyrics have a dual purpose. After the music sets this tone for the viewer, the scene ends with a kiss. Again, while the kiss may have been scripted for the play, to the two characters it is very real and the scene is a key factor in the growing relationship.
ReplyDeleteInstead of reveling in teenage rebellion and overzealous affections, A Walk to Remember points to the values of love, forgiveness, and mercy. It tells the story of teens with integrity and purpose, of teens who, though young, stand up for what is right. It tells the story of going against the crowd, of not caving into peer pressure. All the while tugging on our tear ducts.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, its first half is at times a little dark, as we watch Landon’s mistreatment and misjudgment of Jamie based upon her religious faith and in his opinion, hopelessly un-cool attitude. In this, the film is beautifully realistic and thoughtful; each character’s progression brought along smoothly and slowly, without rushing past all the sticky parts just to get to some silly kiss. True, at times it feels as though something has been left out, as if the film jiggles around a bit.
The movie is not content to make Jamie a good girl; she must be a martyr as well. I don't think I'm spoiling anything. Midway through the movie, Jamie says to Landon, ''I warned you not to fall in love with me.'' (Too late!). I remember watching this movie with my sister for the first time and she immediately stated: ''That's it. She's sick. She's dying. Oh my goodness she’s going to die.'' And, sure enough, a few minutes later, Jamie said to Landon: ''I'm sick. I'm dying,'' and the story shifted from ''Pretty in Pink'' to ''Love Story.''
By then the camera had swooped heavenward enough times to hint at the movie's final destination. The audience, however, was stuck here on earth; which is, come to think of it, the name of another soapy teen romance.
As Taylor briefly stated, A Walk to Remember uses the songs played throughout the movie to portray Landon Carter a s a dynamic charter. In the beginning of the movie he is a stereotypical "popular" highs school student, who cares about what others think about him and will do almost anything to preserve his image. This is further exemplified by the song Cannonball by The Breeders. The lyrics, "I'm the last splash, I'll be whatever you want," show that Landon and his group of friends live their lives based on perception that they are the most important and popular.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Landon soon realizes that there is more to life than working to maintain the status quo. He realizes that as long as he peruses what makes him happy in life, he needs to not to care about what others may think. This change in philosophy is accented by the scene in which he proudly listens to the Christian music that Jamie has lent him, even though his best friend Eric judges him for it and accuses him of deserting his real friends.
Nonetheless, Landon stays resolute and ends up marrying the girl of his dreams; the one who changed his heart. The movie ends with song Cry by Mandy Moore, telling the audience that Landon "will always remember" and that his change for the better is one that all should embrace.
