Pretty Little Liars
Pretty Little Liars is a suspenseful thriller in which four young girls are uncovering new secrets about their recently deceased friends murder. Throughout every episode, the girls are tormented by an unknown character that goes by the name of A. These mysterious person texts the girls daily with threatening demands and forcing the girls to act on them in chance that their love ones might be hurt.
In this particular episode, the girls are participating in their schools "Truth up day" which takes place at the school and goes all night long. In one of the last scenes one of the girls, Aria, is looking for a boy named Caleb on the school roof. The director purposely shows Aria putting the bricks at the bottom of the door so it will stay open and then give you an eerie feeling when she later discovers the bricks have been moved and she is locked on the roof. The roof is also purposely filled with these plastic sheets that flap and blow around in the wind. The sounds that the sheets produce make you confused if the sounds are really from the sheets, or the mysterious person walking around being hidden by the shadows and the sheets. Aria becomes frightened and starts climbing a latter that leads to a higher point of the roof. While she is climbing, a hand grabs her, the hand is a boy named Nole who tries to yank Aria down the latter. The questions sinks in.. is Nole the mysterious figure that was following her behind the sheets? Or was it the notorious A?

The show pretty little liars is such an exciting thrill-filled show. There are so many film techniques in the show that make it so mysterious and addicting. In the last scene of the episode, it shows the kids sleeping at school for Truth Up Day. The girls are asleep in one room and the boys are asleep in another room. There is music playing as the camera pans over all the girls sleeping. It is a mysterious song playing to set the mood that something is about to happen. The camera is panning and is a medium shot throughout the scene. The only light shown in the room that the girls are sleeping is a backlight coming from the moon outside the window. It makes the room dark and look mysterious. The camera is tracking throughout the room and then cuts to the boys room. The room is dark except for one area. This area happens to be where Caleb is sleeping. He is one of the main characters boyfriends. He has been using his laptop to try and decode a phone that was dropped by a mysterious character named 'A'. After the camera pans the whole room once again and shows all the guys sleeping, it shows a shadow coming toward Caleb. This shows Mis En Scene because it shows gives the scence some mystery. We don't know who the person is coming towards Caleb. The person ends up taking Calebs laptop but it never shows the face to show who it is. Only the shadow. Who is this person that takes the laptop? Is it the infamous 'A'?
ReplyDeleteThe show Pretty Little Liars is very action packed. It has so much information in it that if you blink, you will miss a crucial part of the plot. This week I watched the episode called "CTRL: A". This particular episode showed many different film techniques throughout it. For example, there was a scene where the girls were meeting up with a man that knew their deceased friend. This man might have been able to give them information about Allison's death. In this scene, the girls are at a restaurant. Three of them are in one booth and the other, Aria, is in a separate one, waiting to meet up with the man. In the beginning of this scene, you see the girls in the boots and there is regular "coffee shop" music playing in the background. Then, the camera is on a book on Aria's table and you see only the man's hand touch it. As soon as this happens, the music changes to scary, screechy violins. The camera tracks up his arm, building up even more suspense, and finally, you see the man's face as he speaks. Also, in this scene, one of the girls in the other booth, Hannah, has her back towards the man and Aria. She takes out a compact mirror. The camera shows her looking into the mirror and then switches angles. It shows the blur of Hannah's face and the sharp image of the man's face in the mirror. This camera technique allows the viewer to see that Hannah is not only listening to the conversation, but now seeing it too. These are just a few of the film techniques in this show that display suspense and how the girls can be sneaky.
