The
Big Bang Theory
This week when I was watching my
favorite show, The Big Bang Theory, episode “The Countdown Reflection” I
instantly feel in love with the ending scene.
In this scene Howard and Bernadette are getting married before Howard
leaves for his space expedition. In the beginning of this scene we see Rouge
roll out the aisle that Bernadette walks downs.
As the camera move with Rouge it allows the audience to see the some of
the other white material that the aisle is made out of behind their friends
that are marrying them. During this entire scene the director chose to use
bright lights due to the fact that the scene is taking place on the roof of their
building. There is also an overhead spot light on Bernadette and her wedding
dress. When Sheldon begins to speak in
cling-on (I’m not sure if that’s how you spell it but I’m hoping it doesn’t actually
exist and therefore I’m refusing to Google it and find out it does, that would
just be pitiful.) Automated laughter is inserted when Bernadette who rarely
yells does. Then as Bernadette and
Howard turn to face each other to exchange vows, the director uses heavy
lighting from behind her to hint that there is something important behind her.
This is the last clue the audience has that there is a surprise for them at the
end. When the scene is over, the camera does an extreme zoom out to the whole
roof, we see the white aisle is the bow through a heart that is placed around
the roof with the same white material. So far this episode is the best because
of how it was shot.
I recently watched an episode of the big bang theory. A hilarious show about 4 geniuses and their average friend the episode I watched was about a situation where Sheldon must learn to drive. Being a theoretical physicist and self proclaimed smartest man in the world he decides it would be easier to learn if instead of getting behind the wheel he builds a driving simulator to be used in his apartment. During the simulator scene the positioning is very purposeful. Sheldon is seated facing the camera as if to give the impression of him driving into the viewer. This allows the viewer to clearly see his stress and despair while he attempts to navigate fictitious roads. Also the camera work is important in this scene. With one full medium shot the director is able to both capture Sheldon failing to control his virtual car and the reactions of his friends to his shenanigans. A flat angle was used so that the viewer would associate Sheldon's movements as would befit a driver because that is how we see drivers. Also sounds are used to portray exactly what a busy street would sound like, and also used to show what a crashing car would sound like when the driver lost control. This show is funny and enjoyable because it shows us that even geniuses arent good at all things.
ReplyDeleteI also watched an episode of the Big Bang Theory this week. On the episode that I saw, Sheldon drinks too much coffee and becomes too hyper. The episode opens with medium shot of the gang trying to finish up a project for work. A close up of Sheldon is used to show that he is sleeping while the rest of the group is hard at work. Penny then suggests to Sheldon that he should try drinking coffee in order for him to stay awake. Sheldon foreshadows that drinking the coffee will cause problems which it does. A cut scene is used showing Sheldon later extremely hyper and unable to concentrate. Chiaroscuro is used when Penny learns that she needs to make 100,000 bracelets. Penny is in a very low lit room which helps to symbolize how her luck is going to run out, and that she will not be able to make all of them. Humor is used as well. Sheldon disappears from the scene for a good amount of time, and comes back dressed up in a superhero costume, asking for more coffee. Sheldon then leaves the room screaming. A medium shot of Penny is used to show how shocked she is by his actions. The scene ends with a dissolve.
