Scrubs
This week i watched an episode of scrubs where Dr. Cox tells a story to his son, about a day at the hospital. He hides is as a fairy tale story. During the episode there is a repeated use of sound in the form of music. Fairy tale like music is played whenever the episode transitions into the story with his son. This helps soften the story and allow for a much easier way to convey the story. J.D one of the doctors at the hospital monologues to himself often and there is a close up every time he does. The use of the close up allows for the viewer to see the emotions in his face and anything else he may be trying to tell. Whenever J.D and Dr. Eliot are in the same room there is another use of a close up. The two are always having relationship troubles with each other in every episode it seems. This use of a close up show that the two are still having feelings for each other and are certainly not over each other especially since she has just broken up with another dr.

This week I also watched Scrubs, and I agree that the show uses sound and music to great effect. The episode that I saw was entitled “My Old Friend's New Friend”. In the opening scene, J.D. enters an elevator with Reid who has a giant needle. J.D. questions her why she has it then the doors of the elevator close. Random “goofy” sounding guitar sounds are used when J.D. is found pasted out on the floor, to help enhance the fact that he was knocked out because of the needle that Reid had. When Doctor Molly enters the scene, “angel” like music is used to have enhanced the fact that other employees in the hospital view her as a goddess and think that she’s very pretty. The scene is almost a mini-montage, as it is slightly slowed down and show casing one event over a longer period of time. The mini-montage is then quickly ended by the janitor, who brings comedic relief to the scene. I also agree with Tommy that the close ups help the viewer feel the characters emotions. In one of the scenes of the episode that I saw, a close up is used when Carla is taking to Turk. When Carla is speaking she tells Turk that they have nothing to worry about and that their relationship will last. Then another close up is used on Turk, with a worried face, helping to show the viewer that even he questions if the relationship will last.
ReplyDeleteScrubs is one of my all time favorite TV series. The use of J.D.'s daydreams into the storyline makes it very humorous. Although working in a stressful and hectic environment, the characters always seem to find humour in their situations. In the episode I watched J.D. had a daydream fantasy of living out his life in a classic 90's sitcom, complete with a live studio audience conjured up by his own imagination. Inside the fantasy scene the camera work differed slightly from usual to display more of a sitcom like feel. Medium shots of all the characters replaced the more dramatic close ups and flood lights allowed for the set to look more like it was being acted out rather than the more natural feel the show usually portrays. The dialogue also changed to show the shift in paradigm. Naturally occurring jokes and funny one line quips gave way to set up jokes and crowd pleasers. The daydream reflected classic sitcoms such as Cheers, Seinfeld, and even Friends in that it always left the viewer on a happy note. Used ironically in J.D.'s mind to show how easy life would be if it were a sitcom the allusion to classic 90's TV series was thoroughly entertaining and hilarious.
