Paranormal Activity Three
This past weekend I chose to re watch this movie. Iv seen all of the paranormal activity movies, and this one was by far the best. To me what really sticks out to me in these films is the way they are filmed. I usually can not stand films that are filmed like this one, they use tracking to film these movies. Its not just average tracking though it is shown thru the characters view by video cameras, security cameras, etc. Most movies it just turns out to be confusing or shaky, but for this view the tracking really works for it. You get the full experience of what these characters are going thru. The video cameras are great for this because it all begins with them going about there normal day, and they have the camera out, it's relatable because who hasn't ever recorded family videos? The only difference here is they pick up paranormal things that create the film. It also makes everything that happens 10x more scarier for some reason. The filming technique in this film really makes the film, and I believe if they used any other method the film would not have been as good as this one was.

I also saw Paranormal Activity 3 recently and enjoyed just as much as the rest. What make these movies really great is that it allows the viewer to look at the occurrences a number of times. Since the family in these movies are experiencing paranormal activity in their homes the father of family decides to tape the events happening in the house. In this film the director used a very unique style of panning when the father puts his camera on an oscillating fan so it could pan back and forth all throughout the night. This allows him to get multiple view of two different rooms and try to capture footage of the events taking place. Throughout the majority of the film though, since it is shot from the fathers camera there is a lot of tracking being done. I agree with the above post that movies that use this technique are usually very distracting and sometimes cause headaches but in the case of this film it was done very well. The shakiness of the camera only happened at certain parts and only added to the suspense of the scene. This film did a great job of scaring the audience a number of times. One way they did this was having the actors in the movie move in and out of the camera which is fixed in one spot. This was a great use of mis en scene to cause suspense because you were un aware of what was happening off screen. This really added to the suspense of the movie and made it a very good film.
ReplyDeleteI also recently re watched Paranormal Activity 3, and I still think that it is the best one out of the three. One thing this movie does really well is its use of suspense. For the majority of the movie, the viewer is watching rooms of a house through cameras set up in various locations. The suspense is created through the repetition of the same few camera angles over and over. As the viewer, you are expecting to see something happen during these shots. However, for the majority of them, there is no action at all. The suspense created really adds to the scary feel of the film. As you watched the rotating camera views, you cant help but hold your breath in anticipation of something "paranormal" happening. The camera work itself also adds to the film's scariness. One of the cameras is attached to a rotating fan, which goes back and forth between two rooms. It does a great job of getting the viewers attention, because you have to scan the room before it rotates, because when it comes back, something might be different. Another camera technique used in this film is tracking. The father in the film holds a camera, and we see the movie through the lens of his camera, which is always moving around the house. This also adds to the suspense of the film.
ReplyDeleteI just watched this over the past weekend. A creepy and dark film which made me think twice about things. What i really like is that its basically home movies. Theres the same repetition of camera shots like robert said. The duration is quick so you know something is going to happen sooner or later. The rotating fan scared me ( basically panning) it would go one way and then all of sudden something would happen and scare ya. The part where the father is carrying the camera when everything is freaking out at the grandmas was unbelieveable. He was using the tracking technique and then it happened. His back snapping, along with the sound was disturnbing. Then the worse sound technique was used. It was silence and it left you with a confused depress feeling. The camera angles through long shots of the bedroom, medium shots of the house, along with some camera looking down on the family representing weakness made this movie better. The lighting chaned over the course of the film with natural light through windows and house lights. There were montages when they would play the tapes in fast forward for certain parts. Overall the film had all gothic elements, and all film techniques.
