Glee
Glee is a show about high school students, and in this particular episode it is Valentine's Day. The students are in lunch and talking about who will be their date to a party that they will be attending. One of the boys names a girl, but another says that he was planning on asking her to go too. The two decide to compete for her love, while the scene switches to two of the students in the glee club. They begin to sing "L-O-V-E" and dance with each other. Then, the scene switches to a montage of clips that show the two boys competing for the girl's love. In one of these clips, one of the boys points to the girls locker for her to open it. She begins to as the camera zooms into her hand opening the lock, and then pans upward to the top of the locker. As the locker opens a balloon is released, causing confetti to pour onto her. Then, the camera looks straight down on the girl as she is twirling in the confetti as it continues to pour all around her, covering the entire shot. Later on in the montage, the couple that is dancing holds a pink heart and the camera zooms in, very closely, on it. Then it cuts right to that same heart on a purse that one of the guys gave the girl, and continues to zoom out, revealing the rest of the shot. At the end of the montage, you see the couple dancing. The guy pulls the girl in from a turn and gives her a kiss. The shot ends as they smile and it transitions to a black screen, but black covers the outside of the shot and zooms into the couple's faces in the shape of a heart, leaving the screen completely black.

ReplyDeleteI also watched this week's episode of Glee. I noticed how important the use of sound is in this series. Obviously, since this show is about a glee club, there is an awful lot of singing. The songs they sing throughout the episode give off a certain mood. For example, this week's episode was all about Valentine's Day (which was quite evident due to the overload of pink, red, and hearts). Like Jess said, the song "L-O-V-E" was sung throughout the montage, which expressed how each of the boys felt about Sugar. During another part of the episode, an Irish exchange student named Rory belts out Michael Buble's "Home". Before singing this song, he talks about how everyone in the glee club has allowed his transition to America so much easier and by singing this song, it reinforces his feeling. I also picked up on the ringing of a bell at the end of every scene. It sounds like a school bell and it is used as a transition from one scene to the next.
ReplyDeleteWith the use of editing and camera work, you can easily pick up on the fact that Glee is a very fast paced show. Each scene consists of numerous short shots. The camera goes from one close up to another, giving a unique point of view to the show. I also saw the heart used in the transition of one scene to the next. It added even more Valentine's Day cuteness to the episode.
PS: Did anyone else think it was creepy that Mercedes sang Whitney Houston's song "I Will Always Love You". This episode had to have been pre-recorded and I just found the timing pretty ironic.
